Dorti sent me a very detailed email on her weight history, medical history and compulsive eating behaviour before she came to see me. Reading her email, I felt a little lost in all the information, numbers and stories; however, the email did give me a direction to form more questions during our first meeting. I’ve always found this word “selfish” intriguing. It’s such an empty word by itself yet there are so many loaded meanings and emotions to it. An artificial word, yet a powerful label.
To be labeled “selfish” is not a nice feeling for many of us so we would do whatever it takes to avoid being labeled as such, mostly, to try to put the happiness of others ahead of our own.
And it’s such a popluar ideal throught human history in most cultures that a lot of people give up what makes them happy to “fit in” the consensus. the problem is, general consensus is just a bunch of ideal, concepts and labels that are all so empty inside.
I feel this 1970 movie was made for me when I first saw it. It started right with hypnosis induction. As the scene unfolds, we see it’s a hypnosis class for doctors. As I guided her into the inward journey, I borrowed her word “an ancient time”. We ended up at a place where we couldn’t exactly locate. There is a palace. There is ocean. There are pyramids; and unnamable animals and flowers. It feels ancient, yet sounds modern. Lisa as Adara in that life is a princess in a small kingdom. She studies astrology and plays harp-like instrument and flute. The name of her father, the king, sounds like “Hoden”, and I had her copy down as the way she saw her father’s name in her mind’s eye. One thing I saw in teaching self-hypnosis a lot was impatience. The reason people get impatient with any practice is that they want a certain outcome, and they want the outcome right now.
Attachment to outcome causes impatience; however, whenever we have fun, we don’t feel time pass. We enjoy the process and we don’t care about the ending.
