There are different types of Eating Disorders – Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia – to name a couple.
Bulimia is about two desires that don’t blend – a natural desire to participate with food, and an unnatural desire to look like models on a cover of a magazine.
Anorexia nervosa most often has its onset in adolescence and is more prevalent among adolescent females than adolescent males. It is characterized by immoderate food restriction, inappropriate eating habits or rituals, obsession with having a thin figure, and an irrational fear of weight gain, as well as a distorted body self-perception.
Sufferers of eating disorders may commonly engage in self-harm behaviors in order to override their feelings of hunger.
SED (Selective Eating Disorder) or more recently renamed as ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) often starts in childhood. We all have memories of how “picky” we were when we were a child. Most of us grow out of this phase; however, some continue to be afflicted with this pickiness throughout their adult lives, and it can cause nutritional, physical, mental, social, and emotional problems.
There are other types of eating disorders. A client of mine has this binge eating habit for “as long as she can remember”. When we did regression, we found that at 11 years old, she was reading Sidney Sheldon, hiding in her own bedroom, as her mother didn’t allow her to read adult books. Another thing her mother didn’t allow her to do was eating “junk food”. So doing the two things together that were not allowed gave her an incredible amount of thrill, especially the books offered her a complete escape from “reality”.
As a grown-up, she works in a bank. The work is very demanding, and she constantly needed “escapes”. Guess what she did in those moments? You guessed right. Eating became a complete coping mechanism for stress.
Mind is very creative in finding ways to cope with stress, and sometimes it may not lead us to a real thrilling escape but creating more problems in life.
Hypnosis is a safe therapy. Hypnotherapy especially regression therapy may offer a quick fix for an illness which is often long-lasting and long-term.
