Some people come to the point where it is obvious that there seems to be this dragging of feet – this holding back – this blockage – this sort of fighting it all the way – the something that stalls kind of attitude that seems to stop them from moving forward. Many times, a client may come in with this attitude – already knowing they are stuck, that they procrastinate, or that they sabotage themselves in a big way.
They want a breakthrough. So much so they phrase it in a way that they want to kick “the Little Something” out of the room, it is generally not the answer, therapeutically or even practically.
This “Little Something” has become a problem precisely because we have refused to listen to it and pay attention to it. It is created by our own mind, mostly earlier on in our life. It simply needs to be heard, to be listened to. When we do, we find out what it needs and wants. In most cases, the Little Something is holding on to dear life for what it feels is right – what it believes to be true – the known information based on past experiences. It’s the way of doing things that just represents security.
Indeed. We do all those procrastination, sabotage, and self-defeating probably to be safe. What a paradox!
Some call the Little Something simply the “child within”, or the “inner child”.
So, in hypnosis, when the conscious mind is quiet, as we give this Little Something a way to speak and be heard, as we invite it into the process of moving forward, as we let it know how much we need and want it, as we find out what it believes, as we acknowledge the strength of its energy – we may have the opportunity for a new negotiation. This then provides a communication between the conscious mind and that part or idea of self that seems to be obstinately sticking with the old ways and refusing forward motion.
When the inner child is calm, a hypnotherapist can start to build up a person in self-value, self-worth, self-accomplishment, increased self-confidence, and a positive attitude. A hypnotic imagery journey is also helpful to this process.
