Depression affects not only the person suffering from depression but those around them, family, friends, work colleagues etc. More women tend to suffer from depression than men and are often more willing to admit their depression and therefore seek help. Often men do not recognise the symptoms of depression in themselves.
There are many different types of depression and depressive illness. The symptoms vary greatly from one individual to another but some common symptoms are:
- Increased sleep, or inability to go to sleep, disturbed sleep.
- Lethargy, feeling tired all the time, loss of energy.
- Reduction in concentration levels.
- Memory loss.
- Increased pessimistic thoughts.
- Feeling worthless, ashamed, guilty or low self-esteem.
- Feeling restless.
- Suicidal thoughts.
- Consistent feelings of sadness, loneliness or tension.
- Feelings of desperation and hopelessness
Read The Depressing News About Antidepressants published in January, 2010 on Newsweek. If dummy pills (placebo) work as effective as antidepressants to lift the darkness of depression, without any side effects, what do you think is really working behind this? — Yes, the holy trinity of belief, expectation and hope of each individual! The power resides in your mind.
Spiritually speaking, depression is the Self feeling it as been abandoned. There is a feeling of loss and sorrow. The limited conscious part of the mind forms an identity to itself. It has lost connection with the deeper knowing of the higher mind. Therefore it is feeling that it is abandoned. That is why many people with depression go through the feelings of the death phantom. It feels that all of the energy is pulled out from underneath. It wants to continue living and continue its identity but also knows that it is appropriate to make way for the True Self, the Higher Self, to come in. These feelings are strong and they are real.
Thus without judgment, depression may be a process that can move you into a new level of understanding and being who you are.
