Money and Personal Finance

Like the word God, the simple word of money is loaded, with all sorts of human dreams, happiness, greed, fears, manipulations, embarrassments, hopes, and despair. Such a complexity!

What is money? It is not a thing. It is not a bank note though a bank note is a representation of money. The closest word I can think of associated with the truth of money is the word “currency”, which came from the Latin word currere meaning “to run” or “to flow”. Money practically means nothing until it runs or flows. When it’s in circulation, it brings things into our lives and enriches our life experience. It shifts things around – goods and services. It defines value. Yes, it seems money goes around and moves things around. We as creators in life can relate to many things include money. Indeed, when we start to see money as a relationship, we start to get closer to reality.

Because of its loaded-ness, many of us have a very complex or even complicated relationship with money. We love it, we need it, we may horde it or brag about it, but we are reluctant to show that we have a close relationship with it. Or worse, we give it a very negative definition as if it’s evil. Like in any relationship, whatever goes inside of us, the attitude we take, the emotional baggage we carry, the beliefs we hold based on the past experience, reflects what we experience in life:

• Never have enough money.
• Make quick money, but just lose as quickly.
• Cannot get out of debt, no matter how hard we work.
• No matter how much we make, always afraid of spending money.
• Constant worry about our financial future.

What Is Money Dysmorphia?

Like Body Dysmorphia Disorder, which is distorted ways of looking at one’s own body, some people have distorted view of their finances. It can manifest as overspending beyond one’s means, or it can manifest as being extremely frugal as if there will never be enough no matter how big the bank account is, or how we actually make enough money to live comfortably. Either way, the perception of one’s financial situation doesn’t represent reality.

This is known as Money Dysmorphia.

Sadly, in many cases, money is associated with one’s identity. For example, the perception of lack of money makes us insecure about our place in the world. This can be caused or reinforced by social media comparison, past trauma linked with finances, former financial instability, or something else.

Working with a professional can be helpful if you struggle to navigate these complicated emotions, struggle to control your spending or not act toward your financial goals, or struggle to spend money for fear of what may happen if you do.

How to Stop Obsessing About Finances

First you should know, regardless of your financial situation, daily expenses, income, and any other factors, anxiety surrounding money is not uncommon. Money impacts so many different areas of our lives that living in our human society, it is normal to have mixed feelings about our finances.

However, just like with anything, you don’t want to worry about it to the point when it begins to impact your health and well-being.

While this is easier said than done sometimes, there are small steps you can take to feel a little calmer and not let it take up as much mental space. After all, money is here to serve you, rather than the other way around.

  • Focus on what you can control: It can be hard not to think about money frequently, as it impacts so many areas of our lives. See what you can do to make peace with what you can’t control, and plan for what you can. Trust it’s going to work out even though you don’t know how.
  • Learning Experiences: Viewing everything you go through as learning experiences keeps away self-judgments about the decisions you make about money.
  • Develop a true healthy relationship with money: Use it but not abuse it. It does not necessarily need to be as intense as Lady Gaga’s song Money Honey, but in this relationship, your money may like to feel good being useful for you. Appreciate it, as you know, whatever you appreciate, gets to have more value. And let it come back to raise the value of what you play to be in this world.
  • Care for yourself: Self-care doesn’t have to be expensive, and there are so many ways you can practice it for free! Free is not cheap. Find richness in daily life and life will be enriched because of you. It helps you feel at peace and abundant.
  • How Can Hypnosis Help You in Matters of Personal Finance and Your Relationship with Money?

How we handle money – how we spend it, how we charge it, how we make it, how we control it – has little to do with conscious-mind rational decision making.

Rather, psychological and emotional factors are more important – how we think of money itself, and how we think of our own worth. And hypnosis is all about working directly with psychological and emotional factors, as those factors are in our unconscious mind.

Hypnotherapy can help you feel more in control of how you deal with financial matters, whether it’s to keep better control, or make more money, or get paid what you’re worth, you can benefit from hypnotherapy that helps you clarify your goals, develop effective strategies to make and manage your money, and draw from your inner resources to define for yourself what you truly want and how to use the help of money to received it.
