Many years ago, before BC established Family Day, The Vancouver Sun described January 24 as “the most depressing day of the year”.

I remember its piled-up list of reasons: “Christmas is long gone.” “Summer is hopelessly far away.” “The post-holiday season debt is settling in.” “The next statutory holiday is months away.” “In the depths of the dark winter months” … While reading it, I felt extremely honoured. They called my birthday the gloomiest day of the entire year!

It helped me realize, maybe I needed to be born on this very day so that I can be a little light? After all, a little candle of light always shines brighter in darkness than under the sun.

I can’t help thinking the way I think. It’s in my blood type: B+.

Hello Kemila, happy birthday! It’s been a while since the last time we communicated. You always bring back plenty of great memories, our journey to go see Bashar in California was certainly memorable. You are a very brave lady and I wanted to tell you that I always respected that in you, and the fact that you trusted me so much despite the fact we had only known each other for a short period of time when we took the trip. The most impressive thing you did was to stay on a tent in an area known for mountain lion sightings, to this day I’m still puzzled about why you preferred to sleep in the tent over the front part of my pick up truck. The fact that my truck had no working A.C made the trip even more memorable, you never complained once as we were sweating happily through the desertic plains of Northern California. Last time we spoke I was in Spain and you in France I believe. Now I’m back in the United States but decided not to go back to Miami so I relocated to Houston. How have you been? What have you done since the last time we communicated? I’m still…

I hope that you are doing great.  All is going well here for me.  I am about 6 months clean and sober, volunteering at the Regional Animal Protection Society in Richmond, and working part-time at Cypress Mountain.
