Aggression is usually perceived as anger issue. A lot of people use anger management to deal with aggression, to a certain amount of success.
They are related, but they are not the same.
I had a couple as my clients. I saw them separately and both in couple therapy. The husband, because of his past wound of being bullied in childhood, when he felt angry, he got sarcastic, and he lost all care for his wife. Being sarcastic allowed him to remain intact, made him feel more powerful, and helped him put up a wall between himself and his wife. It was a habitual place for him to go whenever he felt angry. Through his sarcasm, he expressed not anger but aggression. He was not trying to get through to his wife, but to diminish and degrade her.
Aggression dehumanizes the other; anger does not. When a person feels angry, and acknowledge the angry feeling, it is to feel it and that is vulnerable, but aggression is not vulnerability; it is an attack.
Back to the example of my couple clients, the way to help the husband not letting his anger turn into aggression was in the moment when anger was felt, to maintain at least some amount of care for his wife while he was angry at her. So that he didn’t need to go to that same old behaviour that he knew he’d regret again and again. It was not easy in the moment when anger came up, but it was doable. With some practice and the patience from the wife, they got better and better.
Treating aggression is different from treating anger issue. In a lot of cases, past needs to be looked at and dealt with to take the charges out. In hypnotherapy, we call that regression.
If you or someone you know is having problems with aggression, a session of hypnotherapy is a wonderful tool to explore.
