As the hypnotherapy field grows and evolves, I often get asked why I don’t teach certification programs or run large-scale online courses. The truth is simple: I still love working one-on-one. This post is a reflection on why that choice continues to feel authentic, relevant, and alive for me.
In a typical therapy or counselling session, we as practitioners listen, and reflect. In so doing, we help our clients draw out their inner wisdom, so they find answers, solutions or resolutions on their own.
A therapist/counsellor is not there to tell a client what to do, as we cannot decide for anyone else. With that said, throughout my years of practice, I find we don’t need to rigidise anything that we think is “good” or helpful. Besides the lines of “Tell me more about it”, and “how does that make you feel” to reflect back a client’s own inner resources, there are also places for our flexibility, relatability and intuition.
This morning, I found this piece I wrote in 2017 and decided to use it for this month’s blog post. I’m currently travelling in the Netherlands. I left the draft of this blog post on my computer screen and headed for Hilversum, today’s agenda. The moment I pulled my phone out to take a picture in the beautiful purple flower field, a dragonfly landed on my phone. I could not take a picture of my phone with a dragonfly on it when I needed it to take a picture. I called my partner. By the time he came, the dragonfly flew away. I sighed, but my partner asked me not to move. The cute dragonfly just flew up and landed on top of my hat. How synchronistic!
“Turn thoughts to thinking.” When this idea first came to me on one of those morning walks, it lit a light bulb in my head. Everything became crystal clear, including many ways I could use it to illustrate and explain how the mind works, or not.
But my true answer is that I practice “Kemilian”. That sounds quite funny. But then, the unconscious mind processes information 11 million bits per second. As a hypnotherapist trusting her own unconscious mind, I think that’s a very appropriate answer to the question of my practice, including the sound of it.
Sylvia is a 24-year-old young lady. She used to be a professional athlete, now working in the financial field. On our phone consultation, she said she experienced intense emotions but could not stop them. She wondered if there were unconscious...
It was such an ease to work with Victor. Some people have that aura. I felt it when we had a Skype consultation, where he told me what he was at crossroads. He’d had a successful career over the last twenty years making video games. But there was constant stress to meet aggressive deadlines, and he would work very intensively for stretches of time, only to be laid off when the projects were over.
This time, he started to hesitate. Should he go back to making games? He knew he could easily do so, although he had begun finding the work itself less fulfilling. Or should he do something new?
Wanda told me she felt blocked and therefore stuck in life, even though she has multiple talents and interests. She has done a lot of inner work, including some “spiritual work deep into the self”, where she found some emotional triggers. She went to see a counsellor who used the emotional triggers to attempt to take her back in time…
That was when Wanda “hit a wall” – “I couldn’t get any further. I couldn’t get past the wall.” She told me.
A wall! “How do you know there was a wall?” I asked Wanda. My alarm went off. If there were nothing to hide, disallow, shame, or protect, there wouldn’t be any need for a wall.
We can experience the high road, the low road or the invisible road, but we can only have experience. Doubt tells us that we can make a bad choice, and we can’t. We can only experience. Doubt causes us to stay in our little human trap, causes us to stay little, to keep playing the game of “I am little.” We have more fun with doubt than just about any other energy.
So here I am, driving the car I was inspired to buy, sitting in a garden of a Spanish-Villa-style house in Oregon, so close to Mt. Shasta, taking a course to end the trance of suffering taught by an enlightened being who I call my teacher, at the perfect address 832 A Street, having paid the course with the newly found cash, feeling how crazy fun all this has been.
