Clinical, or medical, hypnosis is an astonishingly effective way of reducing – and even removing – pain responses. This has been known to mankind for hundreds of years. From dentists to surgeons, hypnosis is excellent for producing analgesia and anesthesia. Now how can you begin to use hypnosis to reduce pain yourself?
Stress and pain are intimately related. When being in pain causes stress or being stressed worsens pain, hypnosis, which focuses on the relationship between the mind and body, can help break the cycle.
Hypnosis creates a relaxed or altered state where the conscious part of the brain is temporarily tuned out as the person focuses on relaxation and lets go of distracting thoughts. When our minds are concentrated and focused, we are able to use them more powerfully. When hypnotized, a person may experience physiologic changes, such as a slowing of the pulse and respiration, and an increase in alpha brain waves. The person may also become more open to specific suggestions and goals, such as reducing pain. In the post-suggestion phase, the therapist reinforces the continued use of the new behavior.
Pain is a signal that something needs attention. Acute pain is very intense yet temporary, like when you stub your toe. Chronic pain has no prospect of ending.
How you feel about the pain is the key to treatment, as your attitudes, beliefs, expectations all have direct effects on the way you experience pain. And of course emotions such as depression, anxiety, boredom, and relaxation all influence the intensity of physical pain, and vice versa – When a person is in pain, they can become highly emotional.
When you come in, I would let you describe the pain fully. Your organic words may offer some metaphors for me to work on so that we can start to build your levels of comfort.
I’ll then introduce simple Self-Hypnosis techniques such as Objectifying Technique to switch off pain on your own.
Treatments vary – regression, control room, turn down the scale, distraction, re-framing, hypnotic numbing, and dissociation. There are many hypnotic approaches to pain control.
And of course, not only physical experience of pain, hypnosis is used for psychological reference to the pain as well.
I’ve written blog posts about pain control. There are many pain relief hypnosis mp3 downloads on this site.
